Gas Prices to Fall to Lowest July 4th Level Since 2021 as Middle East Tensions Cool

June 30, 2025

Gas, diesel prices fall ahead of Independence Day in many states

(June 30, 2025 - DALLAS)GasBuddy, North America’s trusted fuel savings platform for more than 25 years, today released its 2025 Independence Day gas price forecast, projecting the national average price of gas will fall to $3.15 per gallon on July 4, down nearly 35 cents from last year’s July 4 average to the lowest Independence Day price since 2021. Though recent events have caused some turmoil and volatility in energy markets, gas prices have returned to decline due to cooling Middle East geopolitical tensions and increased oil production from OPEC in recent months.

“With tensions in the Middle East cooling off after a few weeks of volatility, consumers planning to hit the road for the Independence Day weekend will see gasoline prices falling in the run-up to July 4 nearly coast to coast,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Relief could continue as the holiday weekend approaches, with the national average falling to its lowest July 4 level since 2021. As long as tensions don’t escalate again in the Middle East and the U.S. isn’t threatened by a major hurricane, we could see the national average fall below $3 per gallon later this summer.”

The decrease from 2024’s $3.49 per gallon Independence Day national average represents welcome news for the millions of Americans planning holiday travel. Americans will spend over $500 million less on gasoline from Thursday, July 3, through Sunday, July 6, compared to last year. It’s also the third straight year-on-year decline for gas prices on July 4, due to the continued gradual rebalancing of the U.S. economy after re-opening in 2022, combined with Russia’s war on Ukraine, which pushed gas prices to record-setting levels. Since then, the Fed has raised interest rates to slow the economy, and supply and demand have become more balanced, with Russia and OPEC continuing to produce millions of barrels of oil for the global market.

July 4 gas prices through the years:

  • 2020: $2.18/gal
  • 2021: $3.12/gal
  • 2022: $4.80/gal
  • 2023: $3.46/gal
  • 2024: $3.49/gal
  • 2025: $3.15/gal (projected)
